2014 Buick Regal GS

Buick revealed the new 2014 Regal today, designed to be a sportier and smarter evolution of the brand’s dynamic midsize sedan. New purposeful technologies enhance safety and the driving experience with a more refined turbo engine – along with the introduction of all-wheel drive.

The new Regal also introduces new radar- and camera-based safety features – including Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Change Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Alert and Collision Mitigation Braking – for surround protection. In-vehicle connectivity is enhanced with next-generation IntelliLink, featuring simpler, more intuitive controls and natural speech recognition.

Adaptive Cruise Control is also offered. It senses traffic in front of the Regal to adjust vehicle speed, including stopping the vehicle in heavy traffic and accelerating again.

“The new 2014 Regal is more expressive, more connected and more technologically advanced,” said Tony DiSalle, U.S. vice president of Buick Marketing. “Nearly half of new Regal buyers are conquests who are new to Buick and they represent the youngest median age among the brand’s lineup.

The 2013 Buick Regal luxury sport sedan arrives at dealerships this fall with a standard advanced eAssist powertrain and 36 highway mpg. Two powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engines give Regal one of the most technologically advanced engine ranges in the brand’s history.

“With eAssist, Buick is redefining what a ‘conventional powertrain’ means to customers,” said eAssist global chief engineer Stephen Poulos. “It changes the fuel economy – but not the experience – for the 97 percent of new car buyers who aren’t buying hybrids.”

Where a hybrid vehicle requires a complex system of large, heavy batteries and electric motors, Buick eAssist uses a compact lithium-ion battery and a small electric motor/generator in place of an alternator to achieve an EPA-estimated 36 highway mpg for both the Regal and the LaCrosse luxury sedans.

The three main advantages of the eAssist system are its stop/start functionality, which turns the engine off when the vehicle is at rest; regenerative braking that gathers and stores energy that would otherwise be lost during braking, and an electric motor assist that reduces the gas engine’s work during acceleration or on inclines.

The new Buick Regal earns the Institute’s top safety accolade after achieving good ratings for front, side, rollover, and rear impact protection.

The Top Safety Pick designation helps car shoppers zero in on the vehicles that afford the best overall crash protection. In addition to good crash test ratings, winners must have electronic stability control, an important crash-avoidance feature, which is standard on the Regal.

The Regal is the seventh vehicle from General Motors to earn the award since the Institute implemented a new roof strength requirement for protection in rollover crashes. In this test, a metal plate is pushed against one corner of a vehicle’s roof at a constant speed. The maximum force sustained by the roof before 5 inches of crush is compared to the vehicle’s weight to find the strength-to-weight ratio. The roof of the Regal withstood a force equal to nearly 5 times the car’s weight. For comparison, the current federal standard is 1.5 times weight

Buick is launching the first of several television commercials today as part of its advertising campaign for the 2011 Regal. The campaign launching throughout July uses both unconventional and traditional outlets to introduce Regal to a new consumer audience.

The first television spot for the Regal titled “Autobahn” celebrates the Regal’s design, engineering and performance, and features the voice of Kevin Bacon. Future commercials will tell the comprehensive story on the Regal and highlight the vehicle’s engine performance, driving dynamics, driver friendly personal technologies and sculpted interior design. Additional commercials will be released through the remainder of 2010.
